(incorporating CHCSS00005 Career development Practice Skill Set)
The way we live and work has been dramatically altered by factors such as: globalisation, economic restructuring and the resulting downsizing, rapid increases in information and communications technology, significant demographic shifts, and changes to the provision of education and training. The move to a knowledge economy and a flexible workforce, encourages individuals to have multiple careers in their lifetime. The role of career development practitioners is to support individuals during challenging times to redefine their careers and skill set for employment, and lifelong learning for lifelong earning.
Career counsellors are needed at all levels of the job market, by individuals, schools, tertiary sector, and organisations. Clients include: students at school and at university, unemployed, those returning to the workforce, individuals in mid life transition, retrenched employees, and individuals approaching retirement.
With the dynamic changes described, it is not surprising that career development is a growing profession. With the important work to support clients with their career, employment and educational issues, it needs to be acknowledged that not all career counsellors are trained or qualified. This degrades the profession, and can undermine the quality of qualified practicing and committed career practitioners.
To encourage professional development, certification of practitioners, and address the training “gap” of the courses on offer, Crown Coaching and Training have developed a short online course titled Foundations in Career Development Practice (Incorporating CHCSS00005 Career Development Practice Skill Set) to provide individuals with the basic skills and knowledge in career development. The course is designed to complement the professional practice, and train individuals to work as a career counsellor.
The Foundations in Career Development Practice course is an online program of 3 topics and 7 units with webinars for each unit. The course is available face to face for organisations with online assessment to complete the program. The course is compliant to the training package, with a national recognised qualification issued by Access Training and Logistics.
The short course is designed for those who work in careers, employment, training and development, and management in roles such as:
Career counsellors
Employment counsellors
Youth workers
Recruitment consultants
Teachers and trainers
School career practitioners
Apprenticeship co-ordinators
Disability and Rehabilitation consultants
Case managers
Human Resource personnel
Managers and Supervisors
The Foundations in Career Development Practice course is endorsed by the Australian Career Professionals International (ACPi-Aus). The program is recognised nationally and internationally. In a competitive international tender, in partnership with DeakinPrime, the course was short listed.
Career development is the corner stone of the psychological contract between employer and employee. It is about ensuring the individual can create a meaningful and rewarding career in return for performance that adds value to the organisation. Increasingly, employees are being encouraged to take ownership of their development and careers.
Managers supervise staff, and are involved in staff performance reviews, and responsible for their work results. Additionally, they may manage their staff development through training, employment and mentoring. Many managers attain their roles through their work experience, but are not always qualified for their role or in career development, to support their staff’s career progress and professional development needs. Yet, the careers and income of others may be reliant on such expertise.
The Foundations in Career Development Practice course has been designed with flexible applications.
By completing The Foundations in Career Development Practice short course, individuals are able to fast track their entry to work as a career counsellor in the profession.
For individuals who would like to continue with their studies, we have developed a relationship with RMIT to enable course graduates to apply for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Career Development program.
The short course in career development can be embedded into an undergraduate qualification at TAFE or university in Business, Human Resources, or Work Integrated Learning Projects. The course is applicable across all faculties and courses.
In my role as the Course-Co ordiantor of the CHC42112 Certificate IV in Career Development course at Swinburne University of Technology – TAFE, the program was offered to the students in the School of Business to enable them to have a ‘value add’ to their qualifications, and to stand out in the marketplace.
Once students graduate and practice as a career counsellor, Crown Coaching and Training offer a Professional supervision and mentoring program. Graduates can continue their professional development with a one year supervision and mentoring program to support individuals to build their experience, enhance their confidence and self esteem.
With a dynamic career development industry, and changes to careers, employment, education and training, as career counselors, we have the responsibility to navigate these changes and support clients with professional services during a time of uncertainty and insecurity in their lives. To professionally offer this role, it’s incumbent to encourage individuals to attain professional qualifications to strengthen our profession.
